He was the fourth US service member to die while fighting fires in India, according the statement.
The incident occurred at a remote outpost in the remote village of Chhattarpur, in central New India, on Wednesday.
The US military said the helicopter was transporting equipment to a nearby camp for firefighting helicopters when it was struck by an IED, and a third person died on board.
It is unclear how the two pilots died.
India’s firefighting force has lost more than 1,100 personnel in the past two months.
