A company that provides firefighting services to federal agencies is trying a new business model: it’s using its firefighting expertise to make extra cash from the sale of firefighting equipment to private contractors.
In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Fire Protection Association said it was looking to buy firefighting tools and gear from Firefighters First, a private company that has been in business for more than 30 years.
Firefighters First provides fire suppression and air defense systems for federal agencies, but has not been licensed to provide firefighting firefighting gear.
The firm’s website says it is dedicated to “providing a level of safety and quality service to the public.”
The filing also said the NFA wanted to purchase “supplies of fire fighting equipment, firefighting clothing and equipment, equipment to be used in the prevention of fires and for fire suppression.”
It said the company’s focus is on “furnishing firefighting products and services to the national, state, and local governments that are in need of fire suppression, protection and fire protection, and equipment that is available to assist in these efforts.”
The NFA said in a statement that it was “working with FirefightersFirst to ensure our acquisition is compliant with federal, state and local regulations.”
It’s not clear whether the company will sell the firefighting supplies or equipment to NFA.
Firefighters’ First declined to comment for this story.NFA officials declined to discuss the matter.
The agency said the equipment purchased will be used for federal law enforcement and emergency response activities.
Firefighter First is not a private organization, but the filing says it “works with all of the relevant federal agencies” and “has a strong national presence.”
Firefighters’ first says it’s committed to complying with the rules of the Department of Homeland Security and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
