By TOM SANDERSWEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2021(AP: Tom Szczerbowski)A few people in the state of North Dakota are taking action after the state was rocked by a spill of chemicals into a lake that had previously been considered safe.
A total of 8,300 gallons of hydrochloric acid were spilled into the Yellowstone River near the town of Pembina and into the Elk River, according to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Conservation.
The lake is one of four in the county that are part of a large lake that serves as a reservoir for drinking water for the nearby town of Oglala, about a 40-minute drive from the spill site.
The lake was temporarily closed as of Friday, and is expected to remain closed through the weekend.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the spill and determining what kind of toxic chemicals are released into the lake.
